Why Students Don't Complete Apprenticeships: A Survey of Current Apprentices

It has been recognized that with anticipated shortages in many trades in the future we need to try to address challenges that prevent apprentices' completion of their course of study. A bottleneck exists in the ratio of journeypersons to apprentices being trained on the job as there are often not enough qualified journeypersons to train apprentices. This project was initiated to determine the reasons why student apprentices abandoned their studies before writing their final examinations. Click here for the full report.

Getting Back to Prosperity

An event designed for employers who need information about hiring Internationally Trained Individuals (ITI). The Conference Board of Canada estimates that by 2013, immigration will account for 100% of the labour growth in Canada. A range of issues often prevent Peel & Halton employers from tapping into the ITI pool. This includes understanding foreign accreditation and fluency in the English language.

The event was planned to "demystify" the ITI puzzle for employers! The event started with a keynote address by Marie Gravel, Director of Research and Analysis, Service Canada Ontario Region. Her address presented current statistics about the aging workforce and retirement patterns of Canadians highlighting that large numbers of Canadians will begin exiting the workforce beginning in 2011.

An employer panel comprised of small and large employers then shared their leading edge strategies and best practices they have used in understanding, hiring and retaining ITI's. The panel consisted of representatives from Deloite Management Services, Nytric Limited, Proctor & Gamble Inc., RBC and Xerox Canada. Over 50 employers present were able to network and learn from the panel of employers. Press Release and Media Coverage.
